When treating lower back pain one of my structural assessments include evaluating the state of the Dai mai/Jingmen GB 25 region (oblique/transverse abdominus). I do this by palpating this region bilaterally and assessing any pain upon pressure elicited. If this region shows tightness, spasticity, or pain it is essential to release this as it can result in a pelvic shift and thus ultimately result in lower back pain.
Fuliu (Kid 7) does an amazing job of releasing this area and I am constantly amazed at how well it is able to do so. Yesterday I was treating an individual who I have been treating on and off for the last year or so. She Initially received acupuncture treatment due to arthritic changes to L4/L5 lower back pain/sacrum pain. This was relieved after a course of acupuncture treatment and she has been receiving monthly maintenance treatments since. In treatment yesterday through palpation I found tightness and pain at the right hand side region of Jingmen GB 25 (oblique/transverse abdominus). The subsequent palpation and needling of Fuliu Kid 7 released this area by 70% immediately and after five minutes of needle retention and some gentle manipulation the pain/spasticity resolved completely in this region.
Now to put this clinical picture into a theoretical construct, the classical Chinese acupuncturists depicted Fuliu Kid 7 as the ‘metal’ point of the ‘water’ channel (kidney). If we observe wuxing (5 element) theory it is the metal ‘mother’ that nourishes the water ‘child’. Thus it is no surprise that one of the principle tonification points (Fuliu Kid 7) on the kidney ‘water’ meridian will effect a change at the region of Jingmen GB 25 (kidney mu point where the energetics of the organ emanate on the superficial aspect of the body).
In other words in cases of kidney deficiency manifesting as pressure pain at the region of Jingmen GB 25 (kidney mu point) using Fuliu Kid 7 as an acupuncture treatment point does a beautiful job in releasing this area and subsequently ameliorating the associated lower back pain symptom.
I would like to highlight that Fuliu Kid 7 is one acu-point of many that I utilised in the above described acupuncture session for the treatment of lower back pain. Fuliu Kid 7 is an extremely effective acu-point that I use regularly in treating a myriad of conditions that share a constitutional component of kidney deficiency, and by no means are its uses limited to the example above.
In future blog posts I intend to highlight further acupuncture clinical snapshots that exemplify the amazing scope that Fuliu Kid 7 has in terms of function and treatment application.
