yin & yang wei mai, an introduction through the characters...

The Yin & Yang Wei Mai (extraordinary meridians) are known as the ‘linking vessels’ or the ‘support vessel’s). The Chinese Character used to depict ‘Wei’ is drawn as silk threads and a bird being cooked to a state of perfection. In this case the ‘bird’ is said to represent the spirit with the warmth provided by the fire representing the ‘warmth’ needed to bring on a state of ‘perfection’. The silk threads relate to a fine all enveloping ‘net’ (of ‘warmth’ and ‘spirit’) bringing support, comfort and protection. Thus, the image conjured up by the concept of ‘Wei Mai’ is that of support, unity & balance which is linked & kept in perfect place by the fine heavenly netting.
Thus the Yin Wei Mai protects and supports the vital circulation of the Yin meridians & the Yang Wei Mai supports and protects the Qi flow in the Yang Meridians. Together, the Wei Mai’s regulate each other, supporting their relevant functions and respective ordinary meridians. If the Qiao Mai’s provide the dynamic movement it is the Wei Mai’s that support and protect the gushes & flows without losing anything. The Heavenly net of perfection.
The Chinese character for ‘Yin’ essentially shows the shady, mysterious, hidden & cool side of a mountain. The opposite side being that of illuminating, sunny, warm & dynamic ‘Yang’ aspect of the mountain. Thus the Wei Mai’s are both Yin & Yang just as one conceptual side of the mountain cannot exist without the other. The 12 ordinary meridians that the Wei Mai’s ‘support and protect’ are too divided into Yin & Yang. However, they are still one ‘mountain’, one meridian, one Wei Mai…
The trajectory of the Yang Wei Mai essentially travels from Jinmen BL 63 and travels up the lateral aspect of the leg, side of torso, and shoulder to terminate at Yamen (gate of muteness) DU 15. Yin Wei Mai begins at Zhu Bin KID 9 (guest house) and travels up the inner & anterior aspect of the body to meet at Lian Quan REN 23 (corner spring).
Linking the ‘whole’ in all conceptual aspects of internal & external the Wei Mai’s keep, support & protect.
